Vietnam National University, Hanoi Campus Ministry

Vietnam National University, Hanoi (Đại học Quốc gia Hà Nội), took its current name and shape in 1993 after merging with the University of Hanoi, the College of Foreign Languages and Hanoi National Union of Education. It is "one of two leading multidisciplinary and multisectoral universities, tasked with producing highly qualified human resources for the rest of the country".

There are approximately 800 students from China enrolling into Vietnam National University, Hanoi to learn the Vietnamese language every year. These Chinese students understood the wealth of career opportunities offered if they could master the Vietnamese language effectively. And this university provided the right environment for these Chinese students to do so. The university’s environment allows these students to immerse themselves into the Vietnamese culture; and to embrace a Vietnamese mindset, which also enabled them to better understand and appreciate the history, geography, society, ethnicity and culture of Vietnam. All these aided them in the mastery of the Vietnamese language. Being bilingual and proficient in both Vietnamese and Mandarin gave these students an edge in pursuing a career in Vietnam upon their graduation.

It is estimated that a Chinese student will spend an average of six years studying and working in Vietnam. As there is a notable number of new Chinese students enrolling into the Vietnam National University annually, this is a significant group that deserved our care and attention. We believed that an undergraduate’s life is one of the most critical life phases especially in the pursuit of one's faith. Hence, through the various Ministry activities and Alpha Happy Hour program, we hoped to reach out to these undergraduates and form genuine friendships with them and be a sincere witness of Christ.

These undergraduates are a generation, that left on their own, are likely to pursue their own paths and lives separately from God. Should we miss the evangelistic opportunity to reach out to this generation, we are likely to miss reaching out to the next generation too. As such, there is a dire need for us to reach out to this generation and avail ourselves to God’s purposes.
